CAT Scan Detects Early Breast Cancer

Computed tomography, also called CAT scan, may be better for early breast cancer detection than mammography at detecting breast lesions.

A CAT scan uses special X-ray equipment to obtain image data from different angles around the body and then uses computer processing of the information to show a cross-section of body tissues and organs. It is much more comfortable for women, according to Karen Lindfors of the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine and Medical Center.

"In this initial evaluation, breast CAT images were subjectively found to be equivalent to and potentially better than standard mammography for the detection and evaluation of breast cancer," said Lindfors.
The findings were reported Friday at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America in Chicago.
